KCB Board Meeting – August, 2017
President Debbie Deatherage called the monthly meeting of the KCB Board of Directors to order via conference call at 7:36 PM (Eastern) on Monday, August 21, 2017. Answering the roll call were Debbie Deatherage, Joey Couch, Gerry Slusher, Rick Boggess, Carla Ruschival, Amanda Selm, Natalie Couch, Elaine Weisbard, “Cisco” Slusher, Frank Campbell, Matt Selm, Bill Roberts, Josh Gentry, Bill Wright, Dennis Runyan and David Smith. Shirley Stivers and Deb Lewis checked in late. Winter Renfrow was absent. Guest Adam Ruschival was also present.
President Debbie Deatherage called for reading the July 17 board meeting minutes and summary which were distributed in advance. Elaine Weisbard made a motion, seconded by Cisco Slusher, to dispense with their reading and approval. The motion was approved.
Treasurer’s Report
Carla Ruschival reported July 31 balances. Elaine Weisbard made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded by Cisco Slusher and approved.
Old Business
President Debbie Deatherage reported the KCB e-Racers placed fifth and raised $2125 for the ACB Brenda Dillon Memorial Walk. She thanked everyone for their support.
As a follow-up to last month’s discussion, President Deatherage inquired about interest in providing stipends to the 2018 ACB convention in St. Louis. Carla Ruschival made a motion that KCB provide a stipend to each member of record on June 1, 2018 who attends the ACB national convention in an amount to cover the room rate for up to six nights based on double occupancy. Bill Wright seconded the motion. After discussion, the motion was approved. There may be a need to further discuss guidelines.
New Business
President Debbie Deatherage expressed concern about how some people attending the KCB convention dress and suggested adopting a dress code. Carla Ruschival indicated she will share the dress code ACB uses for volunteers at national conventions to provide a basis for future discussion.
President Deatherage pointed out the PR/MEMBERSHIP committee, which meets via conference call at 8 PM on the second Wednesday of each month, needs members and encouraged anyone interested in serving to contact Rick or her. Cisco Slusher expressed interest in serving.
President Deatherage also indicated she is looking for someone to help with posting updates to the KCB Twitter page.
President Deatherage asked for an update from the OFB steering committee. Shirley Stivers reported last month’s meeting was cancelled. The next meeting is supposed to be in August but no date has been set.
Chapter and Committee Reports
Eastern Kentucky Christian Council: Frank Campbell reported 15 people enjoyed lots of good food and fellowship at their picnic on August 12. They hope to meet in October to begin planning their Christmas party.
Northern Kentucky Council: Dennis Runyan reported the Creative Museum has contacted Gerry Slusher about improving accessibility for the visually impaired. Gerry has obtained materials from the Disability Business Technical Assistance Center which she will be sharing with the museum. The chapter is also exploring visiting an accessible park in Cincinnati.
Greater Louisville Council: David Smith reported on recent chapter activities which included a discussion and demonstration of the Seeing AI app on July 21 and sharing information about how to follow the eclipse on ACB Radio Interactive on August 11. They also discussed HB. 3457 designed to improve accessibility of materials provided by Medicare and Medicaid on August 11. Upcoming activities include Page Turners on August 25, the Michael Cleveland/Brian Allen concert at APH on August 26, a cooking activity on September 1 and the fall quarterly meeting on September 15.
Tri-State Library Users Group: Bill Wright reported the phone conference call meeting, originally scheduled on August 15, will take place at 8 PM Eastern on August 29. Carla will share information about using the Kindle app with VoiceOver to access millions of books.
Guide Dog Users of Kentuckiana: Josh Gentry reported four people participated in the dine out and walk at Oxmoor Mall on August 19. There is concern about lack of participation in chapter activities and conference calls. the next meeting will be on August 28 on the conference line.
Support Alliance of the Visually Impaired: Bill Roberts reported 13 members and 7 guests attended the August 8 meeting. SAVI is enrolled in the Kroger Rewards program and hopes to have a Dine out fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse. The chapter will have a booth at Senior Day Out at Town Square Mall on September 21 and is considering a trip to the Evansville Association for the Blind. Topics discussed included guide dog schools, exercise programs from BlindAlive, the Seeing AI app and the OrCam. The next meeting will be a picnic from 1-3 PM on September 13 at the east shelter in Legion Park.
KCB Next Generation: Matt Selm reported they will have a dine Out from 9:30 to noon on August 26 at Toast on Market. The time has been changed so people can get back to APH for the Michael Cleveland event at 1 PM. Dine out reservations are due by noon on August 25. The next conference call meeting will be at 8 PM on September 10.
KCCLV: Carla Ruschival reported Brian Goemmer demonstrated several magnifiers at their July 27 meeting. The August 10 meeting featured discussions on cooking techniques and using VoiceOver. APH will share and demonstrate several products at the August 24 meeting. Shirley Stivers reported the phone meeting on August 1 included discussion on how to get assistance with in store shopping and online shopping for pickup or delivery. The next conference call will be at 8 PM on September 5.
PR/Membership: Rick Boggess reported the committee met on August 9. There were newsletter, calendar and webpage updates. No action was taken since several members were absent. The next meeting will be at 8 PM on September 13.
Convention Planning Committee: Joey Couch provided an update from the July 20 meeting. The committee decided on a baseball theme, discussed speaker ideas and shared some program ideas. Chapters are encouraged to share information about planned convention activities. The August 17 meeting (which was cancelled due to lack of a quorum) has been rescheduled for 7:30 on August 23. Amanda Selm made a motion that the theme for the 2017 KCB convention be “Hit a Homerun with KCB.” The motion was seconded by Carla Ruschival and unanimously approved.
Elaine Weisbard made a motion to accept committee reports. The motion was seconded by Frank Campbell and approved.
Announcements and Adjournment
Gerry Slusher asked if anyone knows anything about the government wanting to commercialize the vending program. Carla responded there seem to be several unsubstantiated rumors floating around.
Elaine Weisbard made a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Rick Boggess and unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:42 PM.
