Treasurer’s Report

Carla Ruschival reported December 31 balances. Rick Boggess made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded by Winter Renfrow and approved.

Old Business

Amanda Selm shared ideas for an April 6-7 Crossroads Leadership Conference at United Crescent Hill Ministries with lodging at the Ramada Inn North on Zorn Avenue. The proposed theme is Crossroads: Let Your Journey Begin. One and two-day registration would be available with stipends for out-of-town KCB members. People from other states will be invited. Adam Ruschival made a motion to hold a Crossroads Leadership Conference on April 6-7 at United Crescent Hill Ministries. The motion was seconded by Matt Selm and unanimously approved

President Deatherage raised the question about sending someone to the ACB Legislative Seminar. It was decided we should wait until after more is known. When information is available, Joey will share it via email for consideration and discussion. Rick will share the information with Frank Campbell and Bill Roberts since they do not have email.

New Business

President Deatherage inquired about donating money to Imagine Blind Players for their performance at the convention. Carla Ruschival made a motion to give Imagine Blind Players $300 as appreciation for their performance. The motion was seconded by Joey Couch and approved.

President Deatherage reminded the board about available scholarships. ACB scholarship applications are due on February 15 and CCLVI applications are due in March.

President Deatherage encouraged everyone to think about attending the national convention in St. Louis. KSB graduate Michael Cleveland and Brian Allen will be providing entertainment at the convention banquet.

President Deatherage reported that Michelle Brown will replace retiring KSB Charitable Foundation Executive director, Rick Ricks. Carla pointed out that Rick has been very supportive of visually impaired people and made a motion to spend up to $100 for a retirement gift. The motion was seconded by Winter Renfrow and unanimously approved. The KCB Awards Committee will select and present the gift.

Rick Boggess asked if local chapters can opt to collect dues only for a local or special interest chapter without collecting for KCB and ACB. Carla responded that by virtue of being a chapter of ACB all chapter members are expected to be KCB members. In turn, ACB collects dues for all KCB members.

Chapter and Committee Reports

Eastern KY Christian Council: Frank Campbell reported the chapter will have its next activity in March.

Northern KY Council: Gerry Slusher reported they did not meet this month due to all the illnesses. Three members from Ohio have joined and they are attempting to sell three large print calendars for KCCLV.

Greater Louisville Council: David Smith reported the December 22 and 29 Roundabouts were social events with some games. At the January 5 meeting, people shared their New year’s resolutions and gifts they received. The January 12 meeting was cancelled due to snow. There will be bingo at the January 19 Roundabout.

Tri-State Library Users: Adam Ruschival reported the next meeting will be Page Turners and business meeting during the January 26 Roundabout. Library Users of America will hold its Library Without Walls call on January 17. Participants will share two books with setting, themes or authors from west of the Mississippi.

Guide DOG Users of Kentuckiana: Josh Gentry reported that Deb Lewis did some dog trivia at a recent Roundabout. Candy sales are going well. Bill Deatherage recently returned from training with a new dog.

Support Alliance of the Visually Impaired: Bill Roberts reported 12 members and 1 guest attended the January 9 meeting. Father Jamie Dennis, a blind priest and SAVI member, talked about his recent Amtrak trip to California and his flight to New York to celebrate mass with about 100 visually impaired people at St. Patrick’s cathedral. Members also completed membership forms and paid dues. Scott Heads provided a short SRC update. In response to a question from Winter, Carla indicated there is no problem with SAVI collecting ACB Families dues even though they are an ACB affiliate, not a KCB chapter.

Next Generation: Matt Selm reported they will be having an Uber and Lyft education event from 1-3 PM at UCHM on January 24 to educate drivers about blindness, guide dogs, etc.

KCCLV: Amanda Selm reported there was no speaker for the January conference call. Participants shared information about hobbies and how they adapt for their needs. Carla also reported the January 11 in person meeting was attended by 10 people with some returning after considerable absences. One participant also joined the American Association of Blind Teachers conference call.

PR/Membership: Rick Boggess reported the committee met on January 10. Although envelopes are ready, the newsletter has not gone out since Carla is running behind due to illness. The webpage calendar is being updated regularly and board summaries are up-to-date. Convention thank you notes have been revised. Notes and speaker gifts should be mailed shortly. Committee members also discussed ideas for a membership drive which will be shared at the January 15 board meeting. The next meeting will be on February 14.

Rick then discussed the idea for a membership drive. Carla Ruschival made a motion to hold a membership drive between now and March 1 or 15. Anyone who joins KCB or recruits someone to join (one year or lifetime) will have their names placed into a drawing for two $50 VISA cards. Amanda suggested drawings be separate for members and those recruited. The motion, with the friendly amendment, was seconded by Amanda Selm and unanimously approved.

OFB Steering Committee: Carla reported the next SRC committee meeting will be January 26. Due to recent resignations, the committee now has 15 members–13 need to be present for a quorum. The steering committee will have a conference call on January 17 at 7 PM to identify questions that need to be answered.

Rick Boggess made a motion to accept chapter and committee reports. Bill Wright seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
