KCB Board Meeting – October, 2016

The monthly meeting of the Kentucky Council of the Blind Board of Directors was held via conference call on Monday, October 17, 2016. President Deb Lewis called the meeting to order at 8:06 PM eastern time. Answering the roll call were Deb Lewis, Rick Boggess, Carla Ruschival, Bill Deatherage, Debbie Deatherage, Bill Roberts, “Cisco” Slusher, Gerry Slusher, Elaine Weisbard, Josh Gentry, Amanda Selm and Matt Selm. Joey Couch, Natalie Beyers and Frank Campbell checked in late. Deb Trevino, Bill Wright and Shirley Stivers were absent. Guest Adam Ruschival was also present.

President Deb Lewis called for reading the September 19 board meeting minutes and summary. Since copies were distributed in advance, Elaine Weisbard made a motion to dispense with their reading and for approval. The motion was seconded by Debbie Deatherage and unanimously approved.

Treasurer’s Report

Carla Ruschival presented her report for September. Elaine Weisbard made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded by Matt Selm and unanimously approved.

Gerry Slusher asked if checks have been mailed to chapters participating in the Brenda Dillon Memorial Walk. Carla reported she received the check from ACB in September and plans to mail them this month.

Chapter Reports

Eastern Kentucky Christian Council: Frank Campbell reported that eight or nine people attended last month’s meeting to learn about Radio Eye updates from Amy Hatter. It is possible to access the service from your phone.

Northern Kentucky Council: Gerry Slusher reported that several people, including some children, participated in White Cane Day at the Covington police station on October 14. Gerry also presented at the Disability Empowerment Conference on October 15. She has been invited to do the presentation for a Human Service class in a couple of weeks.

Greater Louisville Council: Debbie Deatherage reported 20 people dined out at Cracker Barrel on October 15. The October 28 Roundabout will have a Halloween theme. Members continue work on several advocacy issues.

Tri-State Library Users Group: Adam Ruschival reported the chapter recently had a business meeting and is planning a conference call meeting at 8 PM on October 19. David Trevino has arranged for Talking book narrator Erin Jones to be the guest speaker. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be a meeting and election during the state convention.

Guide Dog Users of Kentucky: Josh Gentry reported the chapter’s recent neighborhood walk was cancelled due to the heat. The chapter will donate two VISA gift cards as door prizes and auction items at the state convention.

Support Alliance of the Visually Impaired: Bill Roberts reported thirteen members and two guests attended the October 11 meeting. Members voted to sell “peel to Save” cards and credit card holders. Rick Boggess is working with members to sign up for an online braille class. Members want to have a bowling outing and are exploring having a bowling fundraiser. A White Cane Day celebration will be held on October 22 at the Daviess County Public Library. Rick demonstrated the ID Mate and optacon and discussed the Nearby Explorer GPS app. Some committees met, but absences prevented others from meeting. Bill, along with Betty and Rick Boggess, met with an attorney to discuss our 501(c)3 filing. Papers will be filed shortly.

KCB Next Generation: Matt Selm reported the chapter will hold elections at the state convention. Members will donate a copy of “We Can Hear You Just Fine” for the convention auction. There will be a conference call on October 23 at 8 PM to plan a GLCB Christmas party activity.

Committees

PR/Membership: Rick Boggess reported the committee met on October 5. WE hope to put out a short newsletter after the November convention. Updates to the calendar and web pages continue. WE hope to begin training people to help maintain the webpage. Sound Prints is available through ITunes allowing users to schedule downloads using a podcatcher. Work continues to establish contacts on the four year college campuses.

Convention Committee: Joey Couch reported the committee’s work is complete. Carla Ruschival reported people should receive registration materials by the end of the week. Early registration (by November 9) ranges from $8 (no meals) to $44 (includes all four meals.) Registration at the door ranges from $10 (no meals) to $60 (includes all four meals). Hotel reservations at the Ramada Inn North ($80 night plus tax) can be made by calling 502-897-5101 by October 31. Mention KCB membership to insure room rates. Chapter and KCB dues can be paid at registration. The convention mailer will include nominating committee recommendations.

New Business

Bill Deatherage made a motion that KCB provide doughnuts at the upcoming SRC meeting. The motion was seconded by Elaine Weisbard and unanimously approved.

In response to a question from Gerry Slusher, Carla Ruschival reported there is an SRC vacancy for business and industry due to Dennis Franklin’s recent resignation. Shirley Stivers has assumed Dennis’s role as SRC chair. Last year’s board nominees are still awaiting gubernatorial approval. Those already on the council continue in their positions; new appointees have not been allowed to join the council. Deb Lewis will notify Gerry about council vacancies.

Carla Ruschival made a motion to combine the November and December board meetings into a November 28 meeting at 8 PM Eastern. Gerry Slusher seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.

Deb Lewis thanked everyone for their work and cooperation during her presidency. Bill Deatherage pointed out this will be his last conference call meeting. Members complimented Deb and Bill on their work.

Bill Deatherage made a motion to adjourn. Gerry Slusher seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:44 PM.
