KCB Board Meeting – November, 2016

The monthly meeting of the Kentucky Council of the Blind Board of Directors was held via conference call on Monday, November 28, 2016. President Debbie Deatherage called the meeting to order at 8:05 PM eastern time. Answering the roll call were Debbie Deatherage, Joey Couch, Gerry Slusher, Rick Boggess, Carla Ruschival, Deb Lewis, Bill Roberts, “Cisco” Slusher, Elaine Weisbard, Josh Gentry, Natalie Beyers, Frank Campbell, Bill Wright, Shirley Stivers, David Smith (new GLCB representative) and Dennis Runyan (new Northern KY representative). Amanda Selm and Matt Selm were absent. Guest Adam Ruschival was also present.

President Debbie Deatherage proposed expanding the role of the Awards Committee to allow more recognitions throughout the year. She asked Adam Ruschival to chair the committee and encouraged chapters to submit names of those interested in serving by the January meeting.

President Debbie Deatherage also proposed increasing membership on the PR/Membership committee. Carla Ruschival, Joey Couch, Natalie Beyers, Dave Trevino and Rick Boggess currently serve on the committee.

In response to President Deatherage’s question about board meeting times, Carla Ruschival made a motion to have board meetings at 7:30 (EST) on the third Monday of the month. The motion was seconded by Rick Boggess and unanimously approved. There will be no December meeting since the board voted earlier to combine the November and December meetings.

President Debbie Deatherage called for reading the October 17 board meeting minutes and summary. Since copies were distributed in advance, Carla Ruschival made a motion to dispense with their reading and for approval. The motion was seconded by Deb Lewis and approved.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Carla Ruschival reported October 31, 2016 balances which were also shared at the KCB State Convention.

Carla Ruschival made a motion to remove Deb Lewis from the Fifth Third bank Account and add Debbie Deatherage. The motion was seconded by Joey Couch and unanimously approved.

Carla Ruschival made a motion to add Rick Boggess to the Ameriprise account. The motion was seconded by Joey Couch and approved.

Chapter Reports

Eastern Kentucky Christian Council: Frank Campbell reported they met on November 19 to plan the Christmas party. It will be on December 17 at 1 PM at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Hazard. Edna King recently joined the chapter.

Northern Kentucky Council: Dennis Runyan reported the chapter is selling “Peel to Save” cards and card cases. The Christmas party will be at 3 PM on December 3 at Gerry and Cisco’s new home. Gerry Slusher received the Heart of the Community Award from the Center for Great Neighborhoods.

Greater Louisville Council: Debbie Deatherage reported that Christmas With The Council will be held on December 3 at United Crescent Hill Ministries. The party will be a combined effort of GLCB, Guide Dog Users, Tri-State Library Users and Next Generation. The bargain table opens and 4:30 and the party begins at 5:30. Members continue to sell pecans, “Peel to Save” cards and card cases.

Tri-State Library Users Group: Bill Wright reported the chapter will not meet in December. Members are participating in Christmas With the Council. The next in person meeting will take place on the second Tuesday in January.

Guide Dog Users of Kentuckiana: Josh Gentry reported the chapter voted to change its name to Guide Dog Users of Kentuckiana at the KCB Convention. Josh Gentry and Deb Lewis have been elected to the chapter board.

Support Alliance of the Visually Impaired: Bill Roberts reported fifteen members attended the chapter’s November 9 meeting. “Peel to Save” cards were distributed at the meeting. Members will also be selling card cases, but they were not picked up until after the meeting. Members are also looking forward to having some bowling activities early in the upcoming year. The Christmas dinner/party will be held from 12:30 -3 PM on December 13.

KCB Next Generation: Joey Couch reported the chapter held elections during the KCB Convention. New officers are Matt Selm, President; Josh Gentry, Vice President; Joey Couch, Treasurer; and Amanda Selm, Secretary. They will be participating in Christmas With the Council on December 3. They will hold membership calls on the second Sunday of the month at 8 PM EST on the conference line.

Committees

PR/Membership: Rick Boggess reported the committee met on November 2. Members discussed the newsletter which is now out. Updates to the calendar and webpage continue. Efforts also continue to establish contacts on the four year college campuses.

Convention Committee: Joey Couch reported the committee held its post conference review on November 16. The Friday afternoon technology session was well received. When President Deatherage asked for additional input about the convention, none was offered.

Old Business

Carla Ruschival reported that SAVI, Northern Kentucky and GLCB are selling “Peel to Save” cards and card cases. Unsold “Peel to Save” cards must be returned to Carla by the end of December. Returned cards must be in new condition; they cannot be bent. Card holder sales are going well. Carla reported she has received SAVI’s payment for card cases. Anyone wishing to order more card cases should request them from Carla by December 5. Cases cost $6.25 and sell for $12.

New Business

Carla reported she interviewed Joe Manning (Deputy Director, Kentucky Story Program) and Selena Tirey (one of the KSB authors of We Can Hear You Just fine: Clarifications From the Kentucky School for the Blind) for next week’s Sound Prints. She encouraged everyone to listen to this excellent interview.

President Deatherage reminded board members about the ACB Holiday Auction which will be held on December 4 beginning at 7 PM EST. The auction will be carried on five of the six ACB Radio channels. People can listen on the internet by going to www.acb.org, tune in using the ACB Link app on iDevices, or listen on any phone by calling 605-475-8130. This week’s Sound Prints contains brief descriptions of the 70 items in the order they will be offered for bid. Items include food, jewelry, technology, cooking aids and more. All auction proceeds go to support ACB Radio.

Carla Ruschival reported the Midyear President’s Meeting and Legislative Seminar will be held the last weekend in February. Information is already on the ACB webpage.

Carla Ruschival reported the ACB Scholarship applications are already online. Eligible applicants must have a 3.2 GPA. Applicants must complete applications online and then submit documentation by February 15.

Announcements and Adjournment

Rick Boggess made a motion to adjourn. Joey Couch seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 9:12 PM.
